| What are the leading search engines? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The leading UK search engines (by usage)
are: 29% Google 28% Yahoo 28% MSN 20% AOL 10% Ask Jeeves (These figures add up to more than 100% because many people use more than one search engine.) |

| Why should I get my business listed on search engines? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| If a customer is searching for your business,
they'll often simply type your name into a search engine. If your
site isn't listed it won't appear. Also, many people now use the Internet to shop for goods and services. You want to give your business the best chance of appearing in these searches to bring in new business. As a business with a website, your search engine aims are two-fold: 1) Get your site listed on the popular search engines. 2) Ensure it appears on the first page of search results, preferably near the top. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Search engine submission is not an exact science | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| To get your website listed on a search
engine, the URL (i.e. http://www.Ready2Web.com) must first be submitted
to that search engine. Search engines do not guarantee that all sites
submitted get listed and even if your site is listed, there is no
guarantee that you won't end up on the 30th page of results - which
no-one will ever look at. In order to maximise your chances of getting a good listing it is important to design the website to be search engine 'friendly', all Ready2Web websites are designed in this way. Once submitted, if your website is selected to be listed it will periodically be 'indexed' by that search engine; this process effectively reads the content of your website and includes it on the search engine's index so it can be found by people using that search engine. Because many search engines share data, by getting included in one search engine you can enhance your chances of being included on another, for example, Yahoo is indexed by Google and vice-versa. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Will search engines list my website for free? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Some will, others won't. Most nowadays
have a dual system: a) free submission with no guarantees of listing or b) paid submission with express inclusion but this can prove expensive, prices are as much as £200 pa per search engine. Even with paid listings there is no guarantee that your website will be listed but it is much more likely. |

| If I get listed on search engines, what should I expect? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Having your website listed on search engines should prove useful, adds
to the professionalism of your website and may bring you extra business. You do need to be realistic about when your site is likely to appear within search results. Take the example of 'Jones Accountants' in Guildford in Surrey. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
If you are offering a unique (or very rare) product or service then you have an increased chance of appearing. Take the example of 'Jones Specialist Taxidermist' in Guildford in Surrey:
